The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) over the Undas weekend held a commemoration of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) who passed away within prison facilities in the country and remain unclaimed by family members.

According to the BuCor, this included a nationwide mass across all BuCor facilities during All Souls’ Day on Saturday, November 2.

Among those commemorated were PDLs who died during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, with 384 PDLs buried since October 2022, when director general Gregorio Catapang Jr. assumed his role.

“The ceremony emphasized BuCor’s commitment to upholding dignity and compassion, even for those whose lives may have ended in confinement and without family to lay them to rest,” the BuCor said.

The group Families of Victims of Involuntary Disappearance (FIND) also gathered at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani in Quezon City, to commemorate the desaparecidos or those victims of enforced disappearances, as reported on GMA’s “24 Oras Weekend” on Sunday. — Jon Viktor D.
