MANILA, Philippines — An alleged policeman was flagged down after illegally using the exclusive EDSA Bus Carousel lane and almost hitting an enforcer of the Department of Transportation’s Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation (SAICT) last Thursday night.

Personnel caught the Toyota Innova with license plate SKW 888 along the exclusive lane in the congested part of EDSA near the busway’s Main Avenue northbound station at 7:23 p.m., according to a report from the SAICT.

The car’s front doors bore stickers with the text “Department of the Interior and Local Government.”

A SAICT enforcer from the Philippine Coast Guard was almost hit by the vehicle that tried to move past him despite being stopped.

The driver, identified as 35-year-old Eddiemill Barnachea Diaz, introduced himself as a “policeman” to the traffic enforcers, which the SAICT did not confirm.

Diaz was given a citation ticket, where the SAICT charged him for reckless driving and disregarding traffic sign.

He was among the 40 motorists apprehended for unauthorized use of the EDSA Bus Carousel lane, among other violations, during SAICT’s three-hour operation.

Erring drivers should pay fines ranging from P5,000 to P30,000, depending on the frequency of their violation, and might risk having their driver’s license canceled, if they are caught using the EDSA Bus Carousel lane.

Only city buses, fire trucks, police vehicles and convoys of the president, vice president, Senate president, House speaker, and Chief Justice are allowed to use the exclusive lane found on EDSA’s innermost lane.
