Cases of respiratory infections such as common cough and colds, and even COVID-19 may increase now that the weather is getting cooler amid the Northeast Monsoon or “Amihan” season, the Department of Health (DOH) said Wednesday.
Health Secretary Ted Herbosa said that the young children and the elderly should be protected as they are the ones at high risk of getting respiratory illnesses.
“‘Yung elderly kapag tinamaan ng respiratory illness, magiging pneumonia, mao-ospital, pwede pang mamatay. So we take care of the high risk people. Ganon din ‘yung very small children, they can also have bronchopneumonia and be hospitalized,” Herbosa said in an ambush interview.

“It’s actually dahil kulob kasi ang isang room with one people coughing, hawa hawa na kayo ng acute respiratory infection. Ubo, sipon, lagnat…pati COVID,” he added.

The Health chief said they will also monitor cases of influenza-like illnesses and water-borne diseases during the Amihan season.
Herbosa thus advised people to practice good hand sanitization, wear face mask when in public places, and ensure safe drinking water to avoid getting sick.
“Some of our water sources are not piped water. It’s mga deep well di ba, and sometimes the same toilet contaminates the ground water. So ‘yung E. coli, ‘yung bacterial content ng water sources become contaminated during rainy season kaya mas madalas nagkakaroon ng water-borne illnesses,” he said.

Last week, state weather bureau PAGASA announced colder weather in the coming months may be expected as the Northeast Monsoon or “Amihan” season has finally arrived.
