The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday clarified that National Capital Regional Police Office (NCRPO) chief Police Major General Sidney Hernia has not been removed from office amid the ongoing investigation against him.

According to PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo, PNP chief General Rommel Marbil said that Hernia has only been temporarily relieved for a ten-day period.

“Sabi niya there is no truth to that. Hindi po totoo na tinanggal po si General Hernia na RD ng NCRPO. What happened po is nag-issue po ang order ng national headquarters for the administrative relief of General Hernia and General [Ronnie] Cariaga,” she said.

(He said that there is no truth to that. It’s not true that General Hernia was removed as regional director of the NCRPO. What happened is that the national headquarters issued an order for the administrative relief of General Hernia and  Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) chief General Ronnie Cariaga.)

Marbil ordered Hernia and Cariaga’s relief after four Chinese citizens questioned their arrest during a police raid at an alleged scam hub in Manila on October 30.

One of the foreigners also said that the cops tried to extort P1 million from each of them in exchange for a lawyer who is allegedly connected to the higher-ups at the NCRPO and for their freedom.

Fajardo said that the investigation is already ongoing.

“May mga initial findings na rin po sila. Let us wait po doon sa magiging result ng investigation,” she said.
