Justice chief releases 509 PDLs

JUSTICE Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, through the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor), announced the release of 509 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) as part of the government’s jail decongestion efforts.

The release also coincided with the observance of the 30th National Correctional Consciousness Week (NCCW), highlighting reforms in the country’s correctional system.

Among those freed were PDLs who have completed their prison terms, elderly and ailing, those qualified under the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA) Law, and those granted parole or executive clemency.

This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to human rights and rehabilitation.

In addition to decongestion efforts, the Department of Justice (DOJ) and BuCor organized a Special Job Fair aimed at helping former inmates reintegrate into society. The job fair, conducted in collaboration with prominent businesses such as BP One Foods Inc., Breakfast at Antonio’s, Pedro the Grocer, Balay Dako, and PGA Cars, offered various livelihood and business opportunities tailored to ex-inmates.

“This is the true essence of delivering Real Justice for All under the Bagong Pilipinas brand of governance, where human rights are always given paramount consideration,” Remulla said in a statement.

He commended BuCor Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. for his commitment to rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.

“We are not merely rehabilitating prisoners but transforming their lives to become better individuals who can contribute to nation-building,” Remulla pointed out.

He said these initiatives are part of broader reforms by the Justice Sector Coordinating Council (JSCC), which includes the DoJ, Supreme Court, and Department of the Interior and Local Government. The JSCC seeks to streamline core justice functions through enhanced coordination and collaboration.

Celebrated annually during the last week of October, the NCCW is mandated by Proclamation 551, signed on March 15, 1995, and serves as a reminder of the government’s commitment to improving the correctional system while promoting humane and effective rehabilitation programs.
