BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Continuous degassing at Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island resulted in intermittent ash emissions on Saturday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs said 14 volcanic quakes and six ash emission events were recorded in Kanlaon.

On the same day, Kanlaon emitted 4,171 tons of sulfur dioxide gas, state volcanologists said.

“The ash and gas emission events generated light gray plumes that rose 700 meters above the crater before drifting southwest,” Phivolcs said.

Human activity within the four-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone of Kanlaon remains prohibited as sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may occur anytime.

State volcanologists recorded 84 volcanic quakes on Thursday and 31 the next day.
