President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. expressed confidence that US-Philippine relations will remain stable following the recent election win of President-elect Donald Trump.
“I don’t think it will change,” Mr. Marcos told reporters when asked about the future of bilateral relations under Trump’s leadership.
“The global forces that are… and you know, they are our oldest treaty partner; that doesn’t change,” he added.
Trump’s victory marks his return to the White House after a previous term from 2017 to 2021, succeeding President Joe Biden in a closely watched election.
Despite concerns from some global leaders about possible changes in U.S. foreign policy, Marcos believes that the Philippines’ economic and strategic partnership with the U.S. will largely remain strong.
The President assured that while he will monitor for any significant shifts in US foreign policy, he does not foresee any major changes that would impact the Philippines economically or strategically.
The US-Philippines alliance, which dates back to 1951 with the signing of the Mutual Defense Treaty, has long been a cornerstone of Philippine foreign policy, with both nations regularly cooperating on issues ranging from trade to defense.
