THE Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) is enhancing its data privacy initiatives to comply with the Data Privacy Act of 2012, demonstrating its commitment to protecting personal information in the maritime sector.
From Oct. 21 to 25, 2024, Marina conducted a workshop to align its practices with the Data Privacy Act, highlighting its dedication to safeguarding personal information and promoting a privacy-conscious culture.
Facilitated by data privacy consultant Rolando Lansigan, the workshop provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of data privacy fundamentals, covering legal frameworks, risk management, and Marina’s responsibilities in protecting personal information. The sessions were designed to familiarize key personnel with the complexities of data privacy.
Participants also engaged in a writeshop to collaboratively draft a comprehensive data privacy manual outlining policies and procedures to standardize data privacy practices within the agency. This activity allowed personnel to develop essential elements for privacy protocols and practical guidelines crucial for compliance and operational efficiency. Case presentations enabled participants to apply learned concepts to real-world scenarios.
Joseph Victor Generato, director of the Management Information Systems Service (MISS), expressed confidence in the training’s positive outcomes, viewing the workshop as a step toward full and sustained compliance. He assured that Lansigan’s recommendations and support for Marina’s registration with the National Privacy Commission (NPC) would be implemented.
The workshop represents a vital component of Marina’s ongoing efforts to meet global privacy standards, mitigate data risks, and cultivate a culture of responsibility within the organization. Through these initiatives, Marina aims to build public trust, enhance operational efficiency, and prioritize data privacy.
