AKBAYAN party-list Rep. Perci Cendaña on Friday said that his office was set to file a measure that would prohibit standing on parking spaces to secure a slot.

In a statement posted on social media, Cendaña said the “Mindful Parking Bill” seeks to ensure that parking slots are made available for all motorists.

Rep. Cendaña said videos and photos shared on social media showing individuals standing on empty parking spaces to block off other vehicles from taking the slot prompted him to consider the measure.

“Sadly, common courtesy is not so common nowadays. Instead of giving way, it was becoming a struggle to find a place to park,” Cendaña said.

“Like all activities in life, there should be nothing empty. Car owners and drivers should follow basic rules not just when their car is on the road but also off the road,” the lawmaker added.

He also urged motorists not to engage in heated arguments over parking slots and let “cooler heads prevail.”

Frustration over parking space is understandable, and people should not engage in heated arguments over it, Cendaña added.

“It’s better to be calm or just inform the parking attendants or concerned authorities about these kinds of incidents,” he spoke in Filipino.

Under the proposed bill, violators could risk punishment or even cancellation of driver’s license for repeat offenders, the lawmaker said.

He added that the measure takes inspiration from a similar ordinance in Marikina City that prohibits such behavior.
