‘Nika’ out, ‘Ofel’ in but Signal No. 1 remains over NLuzon areas — Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines — While Severe Tropical Storm “Nika” is expected to exit in 12 hours, another weather disturbance called Tropical Storm “Ofel”has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), the state weather bureau said on Tuesday.

Weather specialist Rhea Torres of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Ofel, however, has no direct effect yet in the country.

Estimated at 1,170 kilometers (kms) east of southeastern Luzon, Ofel is moving west-northwestward at 25 kilometers per hour (kph) with maximum sustained winds of 75kph near the center and gustiness of up to 90kph.

She said the weather agency was also monitoring another tropical storm (international name: “Man-yi”) outside PAR but which has also no direct effect yet on the weather conditions in the country.

Signal No. 1 due to Nika remains over Ilocos Norte, the northern portion of Ilocos Sur (Lidlidda, City of Candon, Galimuyod, Banayoyo, Burgos, Santiago, Santa Maria, San Esteban, Nagbukel, Narvacan, Caoayan, Santa, Bantay, City of Vigan, Santa Catalina, San Vicente, San Ildefonso, Santo Domingo, Magsingal, Cabugao, San Juan and Sinait), the northern portion of Apayao (Kabugao, Pudtol, Luna, Santa Marcela, Calanasan and Flora), the northern and western portions of Abra (Tineg, Lagangilang, Bucay, Villaviciosa, Lagayan, San Juan, La Paz, Danglas, Pilar, San Isidro, Peñarrubia, Tayum, Dolores, Bangued, Pidigan, Langiden and San Quintin), the western portion of Babuyan Islands (Calayan Is., Dalupiri Is. and Fuga Is.), and the northwestern portion of mainland Cagayan (Abulug, Pamplona, Sanchez-Mira, Santa Praxedes and Claveria).

Moving northeastward at 30kph, Nika is estimated some 185kms west of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte while packing maximum sustained winds of 95kph near the center and gustiness of up to 115kph.

“On the forecast track, Nika will continue moving generally northwestward to westward over West Philippine Sea and exit PAR within the next 12 hours,” according to the Pagasa forecaster.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be experiencing isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to localized thunderstorms, the state-run weather agency said.
