Authorities arrested two women for carting away money through what appears to be a ‘snatch me’ scheme in Davao City.
In a CCTV footage from the establishment where the suspect works, the suspect, identified as alias “Ana,” is seen putting bundles of money inside a bag and then went out to supposedly deposit the money at a remittance center.
Later, alias “Ana” reported to the police that she was robbed and that the suspects took her bag.
However, investigators noticed something suspicious about her statement.
“Na-snatch daw ang bag niya and hindi niya alam kung sinong nag-snatch, either on foot or naka-motorcyle. Hindi niya alam, which is very unlikely. Doon pa lang nakita na natin, suspicious na ang mga statement,” Talomo Police Station Chief, Major Genesis Oriel, said.
In another CCTV footage at the area where alias “Ana” claimed the robbery supposedly took place, she is seen crossing the street and two people riding in a motorcycle snatched her bag.
However, police said her statement and the accounts of witnesses in the area were contradicting.
She reportedly told the police that a commotion ensued and she got hysterical after her bag was snatched.
However, some security guards and tricycle drivers who witnessed the incident said no such scenario happened.
“Ang statement niya contradicting sa statement ng mga witnesses sa area. Kasi sabi niya, first of all, na-snatch ang bag niya and after snatch ng bag, nagkaroon daw ng commotion, naging hysterical daw siya sa area. We found out na, sabi ng mga security guards at tricycle drivers, wala naman daw nangyari na ganong scenario,” Oriel added.
Later, she reportedly admitted that everything was all made up and her accomplice was her partner identified as alias “Mona,” who was also arrested.
Alias “Mona” was a former employee of the company where alias “Ana” works. Alias “Mona’s” sibling was the one riding in pillion who snatched the bag and is now at large.
Authorities recovered the money, but it was already short of around P69,000.
“Sadly, ang available lang that time is P445K out of P515K, so, something around P69K yung missing pa,” Oriel said.
Police added that the plan of the lovers to go abroad forced them to commit the crime.
Authorities also advised the management of business establishments to conduct a background check before hiring someone.
“Siguro sa hiring of empleyado, ensure to conduct ng thorough na background investigation para sigurado kung itong kanilang mga iha-hire ay malinis at walang former mga violations sa law enforcement,” Oriel added.
Meanwhile, the management of the company is determined to press charges against the lovers and the other suspect at large for qualified theft.
“Desidido gyud ang company nga mo-file para dili pud mogara ba kay nagtuo man gud na sila nga ing-ana lang ka easy kanang mga butanga,” the manager of the company, who refused to be identified, said. —GMA Regional TV
