The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Sunday assisted in the delivery of a baby boy in San Andres, Catanduanes amid the onslaught of Super Typhoon Pepito (international name: Man-Yi).

According to the PNP, the child was delivered in a residence in Barangay Datag with the assistance of a police officer who is also a registered midwife. The child and the mother were transported to a nearby hospital with support from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO).

One of the most affected areas is Panganiban, Catanduanes, which remains isolated after Pepito made landfall on Saturday evening. Its mayor Cesar Robles anticipates a possible shortage of food in the coming days.

“Any day, itong mga parating na araw, puwede na po kaming makaramdam ng kakulangan sa pagkain. [Any day, in these coming days, we can hit a food shortage],” he said in a report by Jonathan Andal on GMA’s “24 Oras Weekend” on Sunday.

“Kung mamarapatin ng national government na mapansin po kami rito, malaking tulong po ‘yan sa amin [If the national government deems it appropriate to give us attention, that will be a big help to us],” he added.

According to Catanduanes governor Joseph Cua, six towns in the province were the most affected by the storm, five of which remain isolated. The local government is now awaiting the lifting of the no sale policy at the Tabaco Port for the arrival of some 6,000 family food packs.

He said he has also been in touch with the regional office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for more food packs to arrive in the province.

“Kanina nakausap ko si regional director ng DSWD [I spoke with the regional director of the DSWD earlier]. They will be using C130 na may naka-allocate sa atin na [that has an allocated] 10,000 food packs for Catanduanes,” he said. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA Integrated News
