MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday claimed that House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez “wants to run for president.”
“He really wants to run for president and if he cannot make it through a popular vote, he’ll just do the Charter change and run as prime minister,” she said in a press briefing.
Romualdez, who represents Leyte’s first district, will run for reelection in May 2025 elections. He filed his certificate of candidacy for reelection on October 1, 2024.
The Manila Times sought his comment on Duterte’s statement but he has yet to respond.
In December last year, Senior Deputy Speaker and Pampanga 3rd District Rep. Aurelio “Dong” Gonzales Jr. said there were no talks at the House of Representatives to amend the Constitution to pave the way for the installation of a prime minister.
