ELON Musk-led company Tesla Motors officially debuted in the Philippines on Friday with the opening of a flagship showroom in Bonifacio Global City (BGC).

“Tesla is committed and excited to help drive a zero-emission and greener future for the Philippines,” the company said in a statement.

Two electric vehicles (EVs) — the Model 3 and Model Y — have been made available to buyers with prices ranging from P2.109 million up to P3.299 million.

The Model 3 sedan — the automaker’s entry-level offering — will come in rear-wheel drive, long-range and performance variants, priced respectively at P2.109 million, P2.489 million and P3.099 million.

Described as the world’s “best-selling electric sedan,” the Model 3 can accelerate from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.1 seconds in performance spec. A full charge gives the rear-wheel drive variant a range of up to 513 kilometers, going up to 629 kilometers for the long-range model.

The Model Y crossover, meanwhile, will also come in rear-wheel drive, long-range and performance variants priced at P2.369 million, P2.689 million and P3.299 million, respectively, and their ranges run from 455 kilometers, 533 kilometers and 514 kilometers on a full charge.

The performance variant can go from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.7 seconds.

Using the Superchargers, meanwhile, will cost customers P19 per kilowatt-hour, with a full charge to cost P1,140.

The first batch of deliveries are expected to arrive in the country early next year. Tesla Philippines will also be opening a design studio that will allow customers to personalize their vehicles.

Tesla signed a lease agreement with the Alliance Global Group for its first showroom in the country, featuring office spaces and a service center.

Alliance Global President and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Tan said that negotiations with Tesla started in May and were finalized within a month or two. Discussions for other potential locations in the country are currently ongoing, he added.

“They will have to open in other cities as well in the Philippines. We’re already starting to talk about it for next year,” Tan told reporters.

Interest in EV is rising in the Philippines, with one of the reasons being that these are exempted from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority’s number coding scheme.

Their share of total vehicle sales remains low, however, given the scarcity of charging infrastructure. Hybrids, which use both battery and gasoline power, dominate local electric vehicle sales.

Around 10,000 EVs were sold in the Philippines last year, a drop in the bucket compared to overall automobile sales of nearly 430,00 units. Automakers, however, have said that electric vehicle sales would grow by at least 100 percent this year.
