VALENZUELA City Mayor Weslie Gatchalian said on Monday that the local government and the National Housing Authority (NHA) broke ground for a major housing project that would benefit 1,530 families.
Gatchalian said he and NHA General Manager Joeben Tai led other key government officials in a groundbreaking ceremony held over the weekend in Barangay Marulas for the Progreso Village-Phase 1 housing project.
The mayor told The Manila Times that the project was part of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s Pambansang Pabahay Para sa Pilipino (4PH) program.
Moreover, the two officials said the flagship initiative was a collaboration led by the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD), Pag-IBIG Fund, NHA and the city government designed to provide decent and affordable housing, especially for Telecommunications Office (Telof) residents.
Located in Barangay Marulas, the project covers a 20,008-square-meter property historically designated under government ownership.
The over 2-hectare property previously used by the Telof has been destroyed by several disasters.
Originally reserved for radio station purposes through Presidential Proclamation 451 in 1953, the property was opened for disposition for the officials, employees, and bonafide occupants of Telof through a presidential proclamation in 1996.
Phase 1 of the development will consist of two 11–story buildings, providing a total of 340 units, each measuring 27.50 square meters.
Upon full completion, the entire project will feature nine buildings with a combined total of 1,530 units, the city government said.
“This day is historic not only for Telof but for the entire city because, after 28 years, we can now say that this project is finally moving forward,” Gatchalian said.
“It has endured three fires, making this day a symbol of the fulfillment of our dreams. We are fortunate that Marulas was chosen as one of the 4PH locations, so we will call this Progreso Village because we believe that new homes represent our progress in life,” the city chief executive added.
He said that his administration would continue collaborating with the concerned national government agencies, especially DHSUD and NHA, to transform idle government lands into viable housing projects in the city.
