Some areas were flooded in Polillo Islands due to the storm surge.
PAGASA issued a storm surge warning at 8 a.m. on Sunday, saying that “a high risk of storm surge may occur within the next 48 hours.”
It said there exists the possibility of life-threatening inundation from rising sea water along with high waves in the low-lying coastal communities in some municipalities in the provinces of Pangasinan, Aurora, Quezon, and Camarines Norte. The storm surge may reach more than 3 meters in these provinces, PAGASA said.
Meanwhile, storm surge of 2.1 to 3 meters may also occur in Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Isabela, Bataan, Zambales, Metro Manila, Quezon, Batangas, Cavite, Marinduque, Albay, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate, and Sorsogon.
Storm surge reaching 1 to 2 meters may also be experienced in Ilocos Norte, Bataan, Bulacan, Pampanga, Metro Manila, and Sorsogon, PAGASA added.
The weather bureau advised residents in low-lying coastal communities to:
- Stay away from the coast or beach.
- Cancel all marine activities.
- Move to higher grounds away from the coast and storm surge-prone areas.
- Be aware and follow latest updates from DOST-PAGASA.
PAGASA will issue the next storm surge warning at 2 p.m.
The center of the eye of Pepito was last spotted at 7 a.m. over the coastal waters of Vinzons, Camarines Norte.
It has maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 255 km/h, and central pressure of 925 hPa.
Pepito was moving northwestward at 15 km/h, with strong to typhoon-force winds extending outwards up to 300 km from the center.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 5 was hoisted over Calaguas Islands and the eastern portion of Polillo Islands (Patnanungan, Jomalig) on Sunday at 8 a.m. as Pepito moved over the sea east of Quezon, PAGASA said.
The rest of Polillo Islands was placed under TCWS No. 4. —with a report from Peewee Bacuño/KG, GMA Integrated News
