One fatality due to drowning was reported in Borongan City, Eastern Samar as floods hit many areas in Luzon and Visayas amid the celebration of Christmas, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said.

“Tragically, one casualty has been reported in Borongan City, Eastern Samar, due to drowning,” the OCD said in a statement on Wednesday evening.

The OCD on Christmas Day said the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), shear line, and low pressure areas have led to significant flooding and disruptions in Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, and Eastern Visayas.

“Since December 8, 2024, these weather systems have created hazardous conditions, resulting in widespread flooding incidents affecting thousands of families across the affected regions,” the OCD said.

In Eastern Visayas, the inclement weather has affected 199,364 people or 52,949 families. A total of 18 houses were damaged and landslides also hit some areas.

In Calabarzon, the OCD said five areas remained inundated in Quezon Province affecting 27 individuals or 14 families. Some 68 individuals or 18 families were preemptively evacuated in Quezon and Batangas. Some roads became impassable and some seaports suspended operations.

In Mimaropa, 30 areas were flooded in Oriental Mindoro and Palawan affecting 48,598 persons or 10,021 families. Of the total affected population, 702 people or 174 families were staying in evacuation centers. Transportation issues were reported due to impassable roads and non-operational seaports. At least 34 seaport passengers were stranded in Roxas, Palawan.

State of calamity was declared in Baco, Oriental Mindoro.

Meanwhile in Bicol, 33 areas in 10 municipalities of Camarines Sur were flooded, which led to the evacuation of  678 individuals or 154 families. Around 20 roads were also impassable.

PAGASA on Tuesday said the shear line is expected to bring up to intense rains over some parts of Luzon and the Visayas this Christmas week.—Joviland Rita/AOL, GMA Integrated News
