TACLOBAN CITY – At least 10 crew members were rescued while five others remain missing after a cargo vessel sank off the waters of Northern Samar, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported Tuesday.

The 31-year-old MV Jerlyn Khatness, loaded with cement, sank off Balicuatro village in Lavezares town around 2:30 p.m. on Monday.

“The vessel departed from Naga City, Cebu and was en route to San Jose, Northern Samar, when it encountered rough sea conditions, resulting in submersion after being struck by large waves,” the PCG Northern Samar station said in its early Tuesday update shared on Facebook.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing for the five missing crew members with the assistance of nearby vessels.

The PCG asked mariners to report any sightings of the missing crew or debris to the nearest Coast Guard station. It advised all ships and watercraft transiting Northern Samar to take precautionary measures.
