MANILA, Philippines — Three major dams in Luzon — Ambuklao, Binga and Magat — continue to release water in a bid to avoid an overflow, the state-run weather agency said on Monday.
Nathaniel Servando, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) administrator, told The Manila Times that they have to open the control gates of these dams because they were nearing their spilling levels.
Servando said the Ambuklao Dam in Bokod, Benguet had one gate unlocked with an opening measured at 0.30 meters (m).
As of 8 a.m. Monday, Bokod dam’s reservoir water level (RWL) was at 751.70 m or just short of -0.30 m before reaching its normal high water level (NHWL) of 752.00 m or its spilling level.
Also in Benguet province, the Binga Dam, located in Itogon town, has been releasing water through one control gate with an opening of 0.30 m or an outflow of 53.70 centimeters (cms).
With its 575.00 m NHWL, Binga’s RWL was measured at 574.31 m.
Meanwhile, the Magat Dam in Alfonso Lista, Ifugao/Ramon, Isabela, which has its RWL measured at 186.57 m, has also one gate opened with an outflow of 267.50 cms.
Magat’s normal water level is 193.00 m.
Meanwhile, Angat Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan, the main source of water supply for Metro Manila and irrigation for its adjoining provinces, measured 200.17 m, still far from its spilling level of 210.00 m, Pagasa said.
