Five persons are missing after the cargo vessel MV Jherlyn Khatness was sunk off Lavezares, Northern Samar on Monday afternoon, the Coast Guard Station (CGS) Northern Samar said Tuesday.

“The vessel was carrying cement departed from Naga City, Cebu and was enroute to San Jose, Northern Samar, and encountered rough sea conditions, resulting in submersion after being struck by large waves,” CGS Northern Samar acting commander Ensign Brhyl Amay said in a notice to mariners.

The cargo ship had a crew of 15 crew, including its captain, at the time of its sinking.

The Coast Guard said 10 crew members have been rescued while five remain missing.

“Search and rescue operations are ongoing,” Amay added

The sunken vessel is located in the waters off Barangay Balicuatro.

“In this connection, all ships/watercraft transiting the above-mentioned areas are advised to take note of the information and take precautionary measures at all times. Nearby rescue activity is also reported in vicinity seawaters of Barangay Lipata, Allen, Northern Samar,” the Coast Guard said.

“Mariners transiting the area are advised to exercise extreme caution and report any sightings of the missing crew or debris to the nearest Coast Guard Station,” it added.
