A 57-year old woman, who was crossing the street at the intersection of J.P. Rizal Street and P. Tuazon Boulevard in Barangay Marilag, Quezon City, was killed after being run over by a bus on Saturday night.
The woman was midway through the pedestrian lane when the passenger bus turned left at the intersection, fatally hitting the victim.
“Hinabol kasi ng bus ‘yung stoplight eh kaya ‘di napansin ng bus na may tumawid na matanda,” said Brgy. Marilag responder Danilo Gapas.
(The bus tried to beat the stoplight, so [the bus driver] didn’t notice the old woman crossing.)
The bus stopped after the incident, with the driver and conductor stepping out to check on the victim shortly after.
Responders from the barangay later came to help retrieve the woman’s body from under the bus.
“Pagdating namin doon, nasa ilalim po siya ng gulong tapos wala na po siyang buhay,” Gapas recalled.
(When we got there, she was still under the wheel of the bus. She was lifeless.)
The retrieval, Gapas said, lasted more than two hours before the victim’s body was taken to the funeral home.
The bus driver, who is currently detained at the Quezon City Traffic Sector 3, claimed he didn’t see the pedestrian prior to running her over.
“Wala po akong napansin na may tumatawid na mga tao. Malinis po ‘yung kalsada nu’ng time na ‘yun. Naramdaman ko lang may kumalabog sa likuran…Tumigil po ako,” he said.
(I didn’t notice that there was a person crossing the street. The road was clear during that time. I felt a thud from the back of the vehicle, so I stopped.)
The driver said he had spoken to the relatives of the victim to personally apologize to them for the accident.
“Hindi ko po sinasadya ‘yung nangyari na ‘yun,” he added.
(I didn’t do it intentionally.)
The investigator from the QC Traffic Sector 3, however, noted that, in the first place, no vehicles should be turning left from the lane where the bus came from.
A complaint for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide may be filed against the bus driver. —KG, GMA Integrated News
