At least eight houses were destroyed or heavily damaged after the ground beneath them suddenly ruptured in Barangay Matinik in Lopez, Quezon province on Saturday evening.
Residents said they felt no earthquake but the concrete walls and foundations of their houses suddenly ruptured. Several houses were totally destroyed while some toppled.
The rupture also misaligned the train tracks that run along the town. The roads in several parts of the town also rose.
Townsfolk said this is the first time such an incident occurred in their area.
Fearing for their safety, the residents evacuated from their homes. There are around 35 families now seeking shelter in the barangay hall.
They are asking the government for assistance, particularly as to the cause of the incident.
