If the social media buzz following the red carpet premiere of “Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital” is any indication, then this Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2024 entry is set to be a chilling standout. Held last December 19 at the SM Megamall Cinemas, the eerie red carpet premiere brought screams, laughs and resounding cheers from an electrified crowd.
Quick to post, reactions flooded social media within minutes at the end of the screening, with fans gushing about their spine-tingling experience. One moviegoer, @theovns_, humorously shared how he was forced to stay at his cousin’s for the night, confessing,”I had to sleep over because I’m now afraid to be alone.”
Another post boldly claimed, “Strange Frequencies is one of the best MMFF horror films to date, and it’s better than ‘Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum’,” referencing the movie it was adapted from. @JB, meanwhile, rated the movie four out of five, declaring it “not your ordinary horror film” and “nakakakilabot [terrifying!”
The cast of “Strange Frequencies,” led by Enrique Gil, radiated excitement and gratitude as they greeted fans on the red carpet before and after the screening. Behind him were co-actors Jane de Leon, Alexa Miro, MJ Lastimosa, Rob Gomez and content creator Zarckaroo, who likewise basked in the crowd’s enthusiastic reception.
Enrique, who co-produced the film with award-winning director Erik Matti and veteran producer Dondon Monteverde, expressed pride in how the movie turned out.
Directed by Kerwin Go, “Strange Frequencies” adds a distinctly Filipino flair to its Korean forerunner, “Gonjiam.” The adaptation follows a team of Filipino celebrities, portraying fictionalized versions of themselves as they explore Xinglin Hospital, an infamous abandoned asylum in Taiwan’s West Central District known for its terrifying paranormal occurrences.
As the Philippines’ first meta-found footage horror film, “Strange Frequencies” is a bold entry into the MMFF lineup. With its eerie atmosphere and innovative storytelling, it is definitely promising that early audiences are raving about the film’s chilling success.
Catch “Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital” starting December 25 as part of the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival. Produced by Reality MM Studios, it is rated R-13 by the MTRCB.
