MORE job opportunities await Filipino seafarers in the coming years, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

These opportunities came after the expansion and opening of the local offices of MSC Crewing Services Philippines and Philippine Transmarine Carriers in Parañaque City.

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac and Undersecretary Patricia Caunan attended the local office’s inauguration on Nov. 26, with Cacdac being optimistic about how this would benefit seafarers.

“MSC means more seafarers and cruise ship workers. That means more work, more coordination, more possibilities of collaboration and renewed friendship,” he said.

Cacdac also assured the officials of MSC and PTC that the issues and concerns over the Magna Carta for Seafarers regarding the cruise sector were already raised and would be addressed accordingly.

MSC Cruises Chief Operating Officer Elia Congiu said their future expansion should create opportunities for 50,000 crew members worldwide, with 10,000 jobs allotted to Filipinos.

“The Filipino crew has always been an integral part of our global operation, known for their dedication, hard work, their talent in perfect harmony with our company. The contribution of the Filipinos is, without a doubt, essential to delivering exceptional guest experience,” Congiu said.

In addition, over five years, over 9,000 Filipinos were employed by MSC, and 85 percent remain employed with them.

PTC Group CEO Gerardo Borromeo said they would continue their partnership with the government and ensure to continue providing careers for seafarers.

MSC’s new offices will serve as a local hub for talent scouting, training and development for seafarers.
