(UPDATE) SECRETARY Rex Gatchalian said on Saturday that the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) would accept food donations from restaurants and fast food establishments while looking for volunteers at the newly opened Walang Gutom Kitchen (WGK).
In a video message posted on its Facebook, Gatchalian called on organizations and individuals to be part of the project as they welcomed food and service donations.
The WGK, launched on Dec. 16, was the agency’s latest innovative program that offers holistic solutions to homelessness and hunger, the DSWD chief said.
Its primary clientele are children, individuals and families in street situations and other Filipinos experiencing involuntary hunger.
Gatchalian said that WGK would also prevent food wastage aside from addressing involuntary hunger.
He said the DSWD already had an agreement with some hotels, restaurants and fast food stores to donate the unconsumed food they prepare for a day instead of wasting it.
With the program, he said that food wastage would now be largely addressed as these establishments would simply bring their unconsumed food to WGK in Pasay.
“Then the food would be served to our hungry fellowmen and families, especially those found in the streets,” Gatchalian said.
The DSWD will open more soup kitchens nationwide to realize President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s vision of a hunger-free Philippines, the DSWD secretary said.
This early, the DSWD said Nestle Philippines had donated 300 pieces of a 1-kilo pack of powdered chocolate while Bossing Nation gave five boxes of dishwashing liquid.
