THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has introduced ready-to-eat food (RTEF) packages as part of relief efforts during disasters and emergencies.

The RTEF was launched at a ceremony at the Mall of Asia complex in Pasay City on Monday.

DSWD Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao said the package comprises healthy pre-cooked meals that would be provided to affected households within 24 to 48 hours of the start of a calamity.

Dumlao said the DSWD collaborated with the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) in coming up with ready-to-eat meals “to fill the critical gap when traditional cooking facilities or utensils are limited or unavailable in disaster-affected areas.”

She said the RTEF was the product of a year of research by the DOST and its adopters.

DSWD Secretary Rexlon Gatchalian said the ready-to-eat meals would supplement the family food packs supplied to evacuees during disasters.

Gatchalian said the package also contains noodles and protein bars.

“We want to make sure that evacuees receive nutritious, delicious, affordable and proudly made by Filipino companies,” he said.
