GLOBE Telecom, Inc. (Globe) said on Sunday that it had started construction of an off-grid solar-powered cell site on Taganak Island in the Turtle Islands, a heritage-protected area and wildlife sanctuary in Tawi-Tawi province in southern Philippines.

The facility, targeted for completion by mid-2025, is expected to provide around 10,000 residents in the isolated islands with reliable mobile and data connectivity to support essential services, environmental protection, and economic growth.

The new cell site will also be equipped with an advanced antenna system and AI-driven energy management with remote monitoring. By tapping solar power, the site will eliminate the need for diesel generators, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 40 metric tons annually.

“This project is a solid testament to Globe’s commitment to sustainable connectivity, made possible by a strong partnership with the government and local leaders to empower even our most remote communities,” said Gerhard Tan, Globe senior director and head of technology strategy and innovations.

Globe added that it was working closely with the local government of Turtle Islands, the 2nd Marine Brigade of the Western Mindanao Command, and the Bangsamoro Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Energy to complete the project on time.

The project is a sustainable approach to digital transformation, meeting local needs for eco-tourism, environmental conservation, and strengthened law enforcement, the telco said, adding that the local government had also allocated land on Taganak Island for the cell site.

“Connecting Turtle Islands to the digital world marks a new chapter for our community, bringing opportunities for growth, eco-tourism, and security through our partnership with Globe and our dedicated government partners,” Mayor Mohammad Faizal Jamalul said.

The telco is also supporting waste management on the islands by donating trash bins as part of its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Globe shares closed unchanged at P2,100 each last Friday.
