MANILA, Philippines — The House of Representatives’ Committee on Population and Family Relations on Wednesday approved, in principle, the bill that sought to expedite the cancellation of birth certificates fraudulently obtained by foreigners.
The committee approved it subject to style.
The bill was filed last Nov. 20, 2024 by some lawmakers that included House quad committee chairmen Robert Ace Barbers, Dan Fernandez, Benny Abante and Joseph Stephen Paduano.
“This bill seeks to provide for an administrative cancellation of birth certificates fraudulently registered by foreign nationals,” the authors said in the bill’s explanatory note.
“The proposed law would also penalize public officials and private individuals involved in facilitating fraudulent registrations,” a statement issued by the House on Wednesday read.
