THE government is modernizing transport and ports to improve mobility, logistics, and supply chains, boosting the Philippines’ economic growth and global trade.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) are working on infrastructure upgrades, security enhancements, and sustainability efforts to ensure efficient port and logistics operations, contributing to the Philippines’ global trade competitiveness.
The DOTr’s major projects address urban mobility issues, including the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR), Metro Manila Subway, LRT-1 Cavite Extension, and MRT-7. These will significantly reduce travel times and improve accessibility across Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
Programs like the Public Transport Modernization Program, EDSA Greenways Project, Cebu Bus Rapid Transit, and Davao Public Transport Modernization Project focus on modernizing transport systems, integrating advanced technologies, and enhancing pedestrian access.
“If ease of travel is the key to prosperity, then it is in the railways that we find the drivers for growth,” said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
“These rail projects are game-changers in our effort to transform the country’s transport system. They generate jobs and livelihood for those residing within or around project sites. They stir economic activity through a ripple effect in various sectors,” said Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista.
Upgrading ports and logistics
The PPA is upgrading ports to handle increasing cargo and passenger volumes. PPA has completed several key port projects, including upgrades to Batangas Port, Puerto Galera Port, Curimao Port, Surigao Port, and the PPA-PCG K9 Academy. Other projects include improvements to Lawigan Port in Marinduque, Tubigon Port in Bohol, and Catillan Port. These efforts reflect the PPA’s ongoing commitment to expanding capacity, improving security, and streamlining operations.
The Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) expansion and the Batangas Passenger Terminal are improving operational efficiency. Automation and digital ticketing systems further streamline port operations.
Efforts to maintain smooth operations include optimizing terminal capacity, implementing strict security measures, and ensuring disaster preparedness to secure the flow of goods and passenger safety.
PPA has managed to maintain efficient operations at its state-run ports. PPA has consistently reported no congestion at its terminals, a key achievement in optimizing throughput and ensuring that the flow of goods remains uninterrupted. Strict security measures protect goods and passengers, while emergency preparedness, demonstrated during Typhoon Marce, ensures continued safe port operations.
“Our focus remains on supporting a stable supply chain for crucial commodities, and we are dedicated to resolving any issues that arise in this regard. We appreciate the continued cooperation and support from our private operators, as we strive to improve service delivery and better meet the needs of the public,” said PPA General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago.
The PPA has removed over 1.1 million kilos of ocean waste since 2016 and is collaborating with the Department of Energy on offshore wind energy projects to lower port emissions.
Technological advancements like automated cargo handling and digitalization enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impacts.
Supporting economic growth
Enhanced monitoring of essential goods, such as rice, pork, and onions, improves traceability and accountability, ensuring stable supplies. Strengthened port security aligns with the government’s anti-smuggling efforts.
President Marcos commended the PPA for its contributions to economic development. A record-high dividend remittance underscores the agency’s financial strength and role in supporting government revenues.
Milestones like handling the 50 millionth TEU container, celebrating this achievement during its 50th anniversary, and developing cruise-dedicated ports, reinforce the Philippines’ position in global trade and tourism.
The successful docking of the Vasco Da Gama cruise liner highlights the country’s growing appeal as a cruise destination.
With ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability, enhance operational efficiency, and secure supply chains, the country sees further growth in both trade and tourism.
As the year closes, the Philippine government’s strategic investments in infrastructure will play a vital role in ensuring a resilient and thriving logistics sector in the years to come.
