Kanlaon Volcano, which is on “intensified unrest” since its explosive eruption earlier this month, had 24 volcanic earthquakes over a 24-hour period, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Thursday.
Based on PHIVOLCS’ latest bulletin, the volcano in Negros Island also spewed 4,636 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Wednesday, December 18.
It also emitted a moderate 100-meter-tall plume that drifted southwest.
Kanlaon Volcano’s edifice also remained inflated.
Alert Level 3 is currently raised over Kanlaon Volcano, signalling a magmatic unrest following its eruption on December 9.
A total of 30 cities and towns were affected by the ashfall from Kanlaon’s eruption, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
PHIVOLCS has already recommended evacuation of residents from the six-kilometer radius from the volcano’s summit. Flying any aircraft close to the volcano also remains prohibited.
Possible hazards that may occur include sudden explosive eruption, lava flow or effusion, ashfall, pyroclastic density current, rockfall, and lahars during heavy rains.
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. had assured that the national government is coordinating with local government units to ensure the safety of residents affected by the volcanic eruption.
The President also instructed the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to release disaster funds and ordered the Department of Health (DOH) to continuously monitor the health situation and be on alert for diseases related to the eruption.
