MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook the province of Ilocos Norte early Wednesday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The tremor happened around 2:54 a.m. some 4 kilometers (kms) southwest of Bangui town, also in the same province, the agency said.
Tectonic in origin, the quake has a depth of focus of 23kms, it added.
Intensity 5 was felt by residents in City of Laoag, Pagudpud, Dumalneg, Burgos, Pasuquin, Bacarra, Adams, Sarrat and San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, according to an earthquake information issued around 3:47 a.m.
Intensity 4 in City of Batac, Currimao and Pinili, Ilocos Norte; Sinait, City of Vigan, San Vicente, Santa Catalina, Bantay, Santa Lucia, Santa, Narvacan, San Esteban, Cabugao,
San Juan, Caoayan, Magsingal, San Ildefonso, Santa Cruz, Santo Domingo, Santiago, City of Candon, and Santa Maria, Ilocos Sur; Lacub, Tayum, San Juan, La Paz, San Isidro, Pidigan, Bangued, Tubo, and Bucay, ABRA; City of Baguio; Atok, and Buguias, Benguet; and Besao and Bontoc, Mountain Province.
Phivolcs said residents in La Trinidad, Benguet felt Intensity 3.
Meanwhile, Instrumental Intensity 5 was recorded over the City of Laoag and Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte and Intensity 4 in City of Batac and San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte; Sinait and City of Vigan, Ilocos Sur; and Gonzaga, Cagayan.
Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol said Intensity 3 was recorded in Bontoc, Mountain Province while Intensity 2 in Peñablanca, Cagayan; Bangued, Abra.
He told The Manila Times that both aftershocks and damage to infrastructure were expected from the latest tremor.
