President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Monday led the nation’s observance of Rizal Day, honoring national hero Jose Rizal.

Marcos, accompanied by the First Family, arrived at Rizal Monument in Luneta Park in Manila at 7 a.m., according to a report by Bam Alegre on Unang Balita.

The president then laid a wreath at the hero’s monument.

The ceremony, held at the place where Rizal was executed in 1896 by the Spanish colonial government for the crime of rebellion, was solemn.

Soldiers also conducted a 21-gun salute in his honor on the 128th anniversary of his death.

Marcos immediately left after the wreath laying ceremony.

Other organizations were set to offer flowers as well at the Rizal Monument on Monday.

The theme for this year’s Rizal Day observance is “Rizal sa Bagong Pilipinas: Buhay at Aral Aming Nilalandas,” to emphasize “the continued relevance of Rizal’s ideas and literary works in building a strong and united nation,” according to the Presidential Communications Office. —KG, GMA Integrated News
