MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday assured the public the government was stepping up its response efforts to help the people displaced by the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon in Negros Island.
In a message, the President said that ensuring the safety of the people was the top priority of the government.
“We will step up. We will level up. Any escalation in damages and destruction will be met with a stronger government response,” Marcos said.
The President said the national government was closely coordinating with local government units for assistance and disaster response.
He said that at least 45,000 residents were evacuated from the six-kilometer danger zone.
Marcos said the government was targeting to evacuate around 84,000 individuals.
“Effective disaster response is anchored on reliable information. That’s why Phivolcs will continue to issue around-the-clock advisories, in language that is clearly understood to all our kababayans,” he said.
