MANILA, Philippines — The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) reminded the public to observe safety measures as preparations for New Year festivities went in full swing.
Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe Zaldarriaga said that Meralco’s crew would remain on standby 24/7 to keep the lights on for its 8 million customers.
“As we welcome 2025, we remind our customers to avoid lighting fireworks and firecrackers near electrical facilities to avoid any possible untoward incident. Rest assured that our crew are ready to provide any needed electrical service assistance as we welcome the New Year,” Zaldarriaga said.
To ensure a bright, merry, and accident-free New Year celebration, Meralco asked the public to:
- Light fireworks and pyrotechnics away from electrical facilities and decorations to avoid power outages and accidents;
- Stay clear of power lines when using party items such as party poppers and balloons since these can cause power outages;
- Have a fire extinguisher on standby, especially when using firecrackers to ring in the New Year, as these can come into contact with flammable materials.
- Avoid “octopus connections” and overloading, as these are some of the most common causes of fire.
- Unplug Christmas lights and other appliances when not in use or before leaving the house.
While Meralco Business Centers are closed from Dec. 30, 2024 (Rizal Day) until Jan. 1, 2025 (New Year’s Day), customers can report power outages and other concerns to the power distributor’s official social media accounts on Facebook (www.facebook.com/meralco) and X formerly Twitter

They may also text their concerns to 0920-9716211 or 0917-5516211 or contact the Meralco Hotline at 16211 and 8631-1111.
