MANILA, Philippines — Power utility giant Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has assured its eight million customers that it is ready to respond to any power outage or electrical issues that may arise as the country rings in the New Year.
Meralco spokesman Joe Zaldarriaga reminded the public to observe electrical safety as he noted that crews and personnel are on standby around the clock to “respond and provide any needed electrical service assistance as we welcome the New Year.”
“When using firecrackers to ring in the New Year, make sure that there is a fire extinguisher nearby in case the firecrackers accidentally come into contact with flammable materials,” Meralco said in an advisory.
The power company added that fireworks and pyrotechnics should be set off away from electrical facilities to ensure a safe and accident-free holiday celebration.
Meralco also urged the public to avoid “octopus connections” and overloading as well as to unplug Christmas lights and other appliances when not in use or before leaving the house.
Although Meralco business centers will be closed from Dec. 30 to Jan. 1, customers can report power outages and other concerns through its official social media accounts. They may also text their concerns to 0920-9716211 or 0917-5516211 or contact the Meralco Hotline at 16211 and 8631-1111.
