MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Ronald Dela Rosa sought assurance from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) that there would be no destabilization or coup d’etat against the present administration.
Dela Rosa issued the statement during Wednesday’s hearing of the Commission on Appointments Committee on National Defense to consider the interim appointments of 15 generals and flag officers of the AFP.
Dela Rosa asked Lt. Gen. Ferdinand Barandon, commander of the newly activated Armed Forces Intelligence Command (AIC), if they were able to monitor any destabilization plot against the government.
“It behooves upon the leadership of the armed forces to maintain solidarity, united armed forces. Make sure that it is not penetrated by the destabilizers. If there are destabilizers, make sure you are united and don’t let yourselves be divided so that there will be no conflict. You should be one,” Dela Rosa said.
Barandon, in response, said the AFP remained united and assured the senator that there was no destabilization plot.
“It sounds good coming from you as the chief of the intelligence command of the armed forces that you were not able to monitor, that there is nothing to worry about as far as the people are concerned. They should not think about coup d’état, they should not think about destabilization,” Dela Rosa said.
