Provincial buses will be allowed to use EDSA for limited hours starting December 20, 2024 and fully starting December 26, 2024 until January 2, 2025, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said on Friday.

In an ambush interview, MMDA chairperson Romando Artes said this move aims to accommodate more passengers in light of the anticipated influx of travelers during the Christmas season.

“On a regular basis, hindi sila allowed sa EDSA pero papayagan po natin sila starting December 20 na dumaan sa EDSA starting 10 p.m. hanggang 5 a.m.,” Artes said.

(On a regular basis, they are not allowed on EDSA but we will allow them starting December 20 to pass through EDSA starting 10 p.m. until 5 a.m.)

“At starting December 26 hanggang January 2, papayagan din po sila 24 hours na dumaan sa EDSA dahil maluwag naman po ang daloy ng traffic dyan,” he added.

(And starting December 26 to January 2, they will also be allowed 24 hours to pass through EDSA because the flow of traffic is light during that period.)

There are around 2,100 provincial buses, according to Artes.

Meanwhile, the LTFRB earlier announced the opening of applications for special permits for public utility vehicles (PUVs).

LTFRB chairperson Teofilo Guadiz III said the application for the special permits for Transport Network Vehicle Services (TNVS) started weeks ago. For other PUVs, the application will be opened on December 15.

“Iyong special permits ng TNVS, it opened last week, we have given 5,000 new units for the TNVS,” Guadiz said.

“For the special permit for Christmas, we will start opening the application on December 15 and then the special permit would be from December 20, 2024 to January 4, 2025,” he added.

Meanwhile, the application for special permits for public utility buses (PUBs) started on November 18 and ended on November 29. The special permit will be valid from December 23, 2024 to January 3, 2025.—AOL, GMA Integrated News
