THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Thursday that the effects of two weather systems and the onset of La Niña could bring enough rains to replenish the National Capital Region’s (NCR) water supply for the dry season.

“We are still counting on the rains that would come from the northeast monsoon and as well as the shear line, so there is still a big possibility of Angat Dam reaching its normal water level within December or until January,” said Pagasa Administrator Nathaniel Servando.

The Angat Dam in Norzagaray, Bulacan, is the main source of potable and irrigation water for NCR and adjoining provinces.

As of 8 a.m. on Thursday, the dam’s reservoir water level was measured at 200.39 meters, 11.61 meters short of its 212.00 meters normal high water level.

Servando said the onset of La Niña could occur within the month or early next year and was expected to last until the first quarter of 2025.

Citing available data, he said the volume of rainfall in December would be above normal and near normal both in January and February next year.

“If amihan (northeast monsoon) would level up and surge this month, we could expect more rainfall in the Angat watersheds. So, we could say water shortage and water rationing are not possible,” Servando added.
