MANILA, Philippines — The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), in collaboration with the Philippine Army, arrested Marawi Vice Mayor Anwar Romuros, also known as Anouar Abdulrauf, on charges of murder and attempted murder.
The arrest occurred on Monday, December 2, at the Hall of Justice following a flag-raising ceremony at Marawi City Hall.
The operation, spearheaded by NBI Director Jaime B. Santiago, involved multiple NBI divisions, including the Criminal Intelligence Division, Counter-Terrorism Division, Counter-Intelligence Division, and the Intelligence Research and Analysis Division. The warrant of arrest was issued by the Regional Trial Court in Caloocan City.
The charges against Romuros stemmed from a 2013 incident in Tala, Caloocan City, where he and a group of armed individuals allegedly opened fire on NBI operatives serving a search warrant under the Dangerous Drugs Act (RA 9165).
The attack resulted in the death of a civilian and injuries to others. The complaint was filed by the widow of the slain victim, Latip Sultan, with witness Abdulraof Alim Dimaporo identifying Romuros as one of the perpetrators.
Romuros, who allegedly changed his name to evade capture, had been on the run for years. Other co-accused remain at large.
The operation was conducted with the assistance of the Philippine Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade, Task Force Marawi, and Task Force Oro based in Cagayan de Oro City.
