THE National Press Club (NPC) has expressed support for moves in Congress seeking the exclusion of the members of the media as witnesses in drug-related cases.

NPC President Leonel Abasola said on Sunday that it is time that Republic Act (RA) 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, specifically Section 2, be amended considering the dangers to the lives of media practitioners and the hassle of attending hearings.

“Napapanahon na po na maamyendahan ito dahil na rin sa nilalagay sa panganib ang buhay ng media (It’s time to amend the law because of the dangers to the lives of the members of the media),” Abasola said.

He added that the NPC and other stakeholders discussed the topic in a consultative meeting with the Presidential Task Force on media security.

He noted that the House of Representatives has already approved the proposed amendment to RA 9165, but a counterpart measure has yet to be filed in the Senate.

Meanwhile, ACT-CIIS Rep. Erwin Tulfo, author of the amendment bill, thanked the NPC leadership for their support.

“Nagpapasalamat po ako sa NPC dahil suportado nila ang aking panawagan na huwag nang isama o gawing testigo ang mga mamamahayag sa operasyon ng droga dahil nanganganib po ang buhay ng mga dati kong kasama sa hanapbuhay (I am thankful to the NPC for its support for my call to exclude members of the media from drug operations or as witnesses because it puts the lives of my former colleagues in danger),” he said.
