MANILA, Philippines — Over 4,000 cases of measles and rubella (MR) have been recorded across the country, the Department of Health reported on Tuesday.
As of Dec. 14, the DOH had registered 4,040 MR cases.
The total number was 1.5 times higher than the 2,556 MR cases reported in the same period last year.
According to the DOH, the increase is largely due to the measles outbreak in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in March.
The DOH said MR cases increased by 34 percent, with 195 cases posted from Nov. 17 to 30 compared to the 145 cases from Nov. 3 to 16.
The DOH said these numbers may change as it awaits laboratory confirmation and late reports.
Eleven deaths due to measles and rubella were recorded in Mimaropa, Northern Mindanao and BARMM.
This is a 35-percent decrease from the 17 fatalities recorded over the same period last year.
