MANILA, Philippines — After two consecutive ash emission events on Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said it is monitoring Kanlaon Volcano for a “possible major eruption.”
Phivolcs director Teresito Bacolcol said Monday that the ash emissions first occurred at 7:46 a.m. until 7:53 a.m. while the second event happened at 8:16 a.m. and lasted for 14 minutes.
“These events generated a grayish column of plumes, rising 400 to 600 meters above the crater before drifting northwest and north-northwest direction as recorded by the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory,” Bacolcol told The Manila Times via Viber.
Latest emissions suggest that the Negros Island volcano is under a moderate level of unrest, he said.
“That’s why it is still under Alert Level 2,” the Phivolcs chief added.
For now, Bacolcol said, the agency will closely monitor the behavior of the volcano following the emissions.
“We will closely monitor its movement and check if this (ash emission) would persist and if this will lead to a major eruption,” he said.
Phivolcs warned the public, especially those living near the permanent danger zone, to take extra precaution and vigilance as “an eruption may take place anytime.”
