Christmas is in the air. In line with the festivity of the yuletide season, the Rotary Club of Makati is mounting a “Classical Christmas Concert” on Dec. 10 at The Fifth at Rockwell, Makati City.
The event will feature Rachelle Gerodias, Byeong In Park, Gerphil Flores, Nomher Nival, Krissan Manikan Tan, Sherwin Sozon with Coro Tomasino’s Mark Agpasa and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s Hermenegildo Ranera as conductors and Eddie Yap as executive producer.
The proceeds of the concert will go to Sisters of Mary Boys and Girls Schools for indigent students.
“Christmas is the most joyful season of the year and its celebration is never complete without music. For this concert, I added a little bit of difference by including more traditional carols and hymns from the ages. These will add reverence in addition to joy for the birth of our savior Jesus Christ,” Yap told The STAR in an e-mail interview on what to expect from the show.
Some of the Christmas songs that will be crooned are Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Adeste Fideles or All Come All Ye Faithful, Stille Nacht, Joy to the World, O Holy Night and the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah.
It will also include Filipino Christmas tracks such as Paskong Pilipino, Kumukutikutitap, and Pasko na Sinta Ko.
“Special performance numbers are a song from apl.de.ap, who is back in town and the Sisters of Mary handbell ringers,” continued Yap.
It was a no-brainer for Yap to come up with the lineup of artists who will perform at the concert since most of them have already appeared on his previously staged concerts.
“First and foremost was the prima soprano Rachelle Gerodias, who has proven her highest vocal range of all voice types which are very suited for her solo role,” he said.
“Gerphil Flores is an accomplished classical crossover singer who was the second runner-up in the ‘Asia’s Got Talent’ singing competition in Singapore. Gerphil recently returned from the US to pick up her singing career here.
“Byeong In Park is a successful baritone with great acting ability. Nomher Nival has a tenor voice that easily surmounted the high C in Turandot’s Nessun Dorma. Others include Krissan Manikan Tan, a mezzo-soprano and Sherwin Sozon, whose tenor voice completes the classically trained lineup of singers.”
