SEN. Ronald Dela Rosa has urged Trade Secretary Maria Cristina Aldeguer-Roque to create a loan program for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with no interest rate.
The senator made the proposal on Wednesday during the confirmation hearing of Roque’s ad interim appointment.
“I am urging you to do that,” Dela Rosa told Roque. The Commission on Appointments confirmed Roque as head of the Department of Trade and Industry.
“This would help Filipinos in boosting their livelihoods instead of giving them financial assistance,” he said.
A program for MSMEs “would lessen the culture of mendicancy among Filipinos,” the senator added.
“This is no longer teaching them how to fish; this is helping them in their fishing venture,” Dela Rosa said.
He cited as an example the case of market vendors who borrowed money from moneylenders who charged them high interest rates.
