TECPLATA, Argentina’s most advanced port terminal, has achieved a significant milestone by securing certification from the Argentine Naval Prefecture to handle Neo-Panamax vessels.
This recognition establishes TecPlata as the first terminal in Buenos Aires and the entire country capable of accommodating these large ships, bolstering Argentina’s position in global trade.
“With this milestone, TecPlata has restored Argentina’s rightful position as a leader in international trade,” said Juan Pablo Trujillo, CEO of TecPlata.

He emphasized that the certification underscores TecPlata’s cutting-edge infrastructure and technical expertise.
The terminal’s design not only supports upcoming enhancements in the depth of the Navigable Waterway but also positions it for the anticipated growth in Argentina’s foreign trade.
TecPlata’s progress in 2024 reaffirms its status as an innovation leader in maritime logistics. Strategic initiatives, such as dredging its access channel and achieving certification as Argentina’s first carbon-neutral terminal, highlight its forward-thinking approach.
With the Neo-Panamax accreditation, TecPlata further strengthens its commitment to driving economic growth by facilitating direct access to global markets and offering unparalleled value in Argentina’s port sector.
Historically, Argentina relied on feeder vessels for cargo transportation. TecPlata’s advancements enabled the direct servicing of Argentine exports via massive 366-meter-long and 51-meter-wide ships. This shift marks a transformative moment for the country’s foreign trade, directly connecting local goods to major international markets.
TecPlata is a subsidiary of International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI), the world’s largest independent container terminal operator.
Established in October 2008 through a 30-year concession granted by the Consorcio de Gestión del Puerto La Plata, TecPlata was developed with a $450 million investment. Its modern design boasts an initial capacity of 450,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), potentially expanding to one million TEUs in the second phase.
