MANILA, Philippines — One of the challenges of hosting a public service show is dealing with the feeling of empathy toward your listeners as they share their heart-wrenching stories, according to radio hosts Tyang Amy Perez and Tita Winnie Cordero.

Tyang Amy serves as the host of her radio wellness and drama show “Ako ‘To si Tyang Amy,” airing weekdays at 3 p.m. on ABS-CBN’s Radyo 630 and Teleradyo Serbisyo, while Tita Winnie hosts her daily public service show “Tatak: Serbisyo” from Mondays to Fridays at 10:30 a.m.

Winnie shared at a presscon that there are a lot of things that she wants to do for her newest public service program.

“We are still looking for staff na talagang magtatawag ng mga bagong alaga. We are also looking for people who will follow through because I discovered that hindi lang ‘pag natapos na yung programa, tapos na,” she said.

“No, it should have a follow through. Kailangan kakamustahin sila. (We should ask), ‘Natulungan ba namin kayo?’ Kasi dire-diretso sa kanilang (mobile wallet app) yung donations,” she said.

Beyond giving financial assistance, Winnie shared they also want to check on the patient. “It’s also painful (especially) those who have lost their loved ones. That’s my struggle — that the program becomes too emotional for me because of their stories about life’s struggles, like may alaga na may malubhang sakit, they don’t have money, sinabihan na tinaningan na ng buhay (they were told that the sickness is terminal). Yung samu’t saring emotional baggage ang binibitbit ko every day and that’s tough for me.”

But so far, Winnie is “getting the hang of it” as she is being helped by her staff to overcome such feeling.

“But sometimes, I couldn’t help it na pagkausap ko, bigla na lang iiyak, bigla na lang hahagulhol, hindi makapagsalita,” she admitted. “You are there to at least give them strength to continue their fight. That’s difficult for me.” She would cry hearing those gut-wrenching stories and get depressed.

Nonetheless, it is in line with Winnie’s advocacy to improve the medical assistance process and services at the Department of Health and Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Radyo 630 team has partnered with the Ayala Foundation to reinforce its public service initiatives.

Aside from Winnie’s “Tatak: Serbisyo,” she also hosts her weekly program “Win Today” every Saturday at 10 a.m., where she talks about budget-friendly advice and life hacks.

Amy, on the other hand, shared that via her show, she gets to talk to people who go through depression and makes sure to connect them with the right organization. “Sometimes, the title of the program becomes ‘Abonado Ako.’ Sometimes, you want to help them, for example, in a seminar that can help them but they don’t have a sponsor.”

Amy and her husband make it a point to allot monthly budget assistance for them. “(We do this) for them to be connected (with the right organization), because mental health is very important for every Filipino. We know that it’s expensive to go to a psychiatrist, psychologist, and you even have to pay for life coaches. Wala namang libre. Ganun sa barangay.”

Through her program, Amy said they were able to give them outlet to release stress. “To let them express what they feel. So, it’s also difficult (for us) because sometimes you carry it with you all the way home. You really get affected, especially when the story involves millennials who grew up abandoned by their mother and father. The latest was someone who didn’t receive any love from a mother,” she said.

“These are the things that are hard to let go of because you know that in your own small way, you could really help them, and it’s not always financial. Just by listening to them, it’s already a form of aid that we are doing in the program.”

Apart from AM radio on the 630 kHz band, audiences can tune in to these shows online via Teleradyo Serbisyo on free/cable TV and online via its official Facebook and YouTube pages or on iWantTFC.

Alongside these shows, viewers can continue getting their daily dose of news and information on Radyo 630/Teleradyo Serbisyo, such as “Radyo 630 Balita,” anchored by Robert Mano, “Gising Pilipinas” and “Teleradyo Serbisyo Balita” with Alvin Elchico and Doris Bigornia, “Kabayan,” anchored by Noli de Castro, “Balitapatan” with Peter Musngi and Rica Lazo, and “Headline Ngayon” by Jonathan Magistrado, among others.

Radyo 630 has partnered with the Ayala Foundation to reinforce its public service initiatives. As part of its collaboration, Radyo 630/Teleradyo Serbisyo will launch various public service programs in 2025.
