Vice President Sara Duterte called on Filipinos to commemorate the memory of national hero Jose Rizal by remembering his courage amid oppression, and by standing for what is right.

“Ang napakatinding pagsubok na kanyang pinagdaanan ay nagpapaalala sa atin na kahit sa pinakamadilim na oras, ang liwanag ng katotohanan at katarungan ay maaaring manaig,” she said in a statement on Monday, Rizal Day.

(The intense test that he went through reminds us that even in the darkest hour, the light of truth and justice will prevail.)

“Parangalan natin ang kanyang alaala sa pamamagitan ng paninindigan para sa tama at kolektibong pagsusumikap tungo sa mas makatarungan, pantay, at tunay na malayang Pilipinas,” she added.

(Let us commemorate his memory by standing for what is right and collectively working towards a more just, equal, and truly free Philippines.)

Rizal wrote the novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo as he advocated for political reforms during the Spanish occupation. He was convicted of rebellion and was executed in Bagumbayan (now Rizal Park or Luneta) on December 30, 1896. His sacrifice and heroism have since been commemorated on the anniversary of his death. — Jon Viktor D.
