Had he lived to see it, Jose “Pitoy” Moreno (February 25, 1925 – January 15, 2018) would soon be celebrating his 100th birthday. The pioneering fashion designer, whose legacy extends far beyond the Philippine fashion scene, will be honored with an exhibition and accompanying book titled “Timeless: J. Moreno” at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila (The M Museum) in BGC.
Moreno’s unparalleled contributions to fashion include his advocacy for traditional Philippine textiles, particularly jusi and piña, which he brought to the global stage. He revived the Maria Clara gown and elevated the Barong Tagalog, making both beloved staples of Filipino fashion. These efforts gained him an elite international following, from French couturier Pierre Cardin to the Emperor of Japan, and even the kings of Morocco and Malaysia.
