MANILA, Philippines — Two vital infrastructure projects in Mindanao were completed before 2024 ended, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways.
DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan said the projects included a flood mitigation structure in Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte and the widening of the Digos-Makar road in Malungon, Saranggani.
The P77.17-million flood mitigating project was intended to enhance safety and protection of communities near the Tuganay River in Barangay Kinamayan.
The DPWH said the completion of the dike and drainage canal would lessen flooding in the area.
“Prior to the completion of this project, schools and other public facilities in the communities were susceptible to flooding due to the low elevation of the riverbank,” DPWH-Davao region chief Juby Cordon said.
The project involved the construction of reinforced concrete box culverts as well as installation of pipe culverts, earth canals and other minor drainage structures.
Meanwhile, the P162.39-million project in Sarangani includes the concreting of a 3.93-kilometer pavement, which transformed the formerly four-lane road into a six-lane highway.
Basir Ibrahim, DPWH-Soccsksargen chief, said the project was completed ahead of its target date, which is next month.
