The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has apprehended a Japanese fugitive accused of defrauding victims of over three million yen through voice phishing.

In a statement, the BI identified the suspect as 39-year-old Yokota Tetsuya, who was arrested in Binondo, Manila, on January 2 by the bureau’s Fugitive Search Unit (FSU) following a request from the Japanese government.

Tetsuya is reportedly subject to an outstanding arrest warrant issued in Omiya, Japan, on May 31, 2024.

He is accused of making a fraudulent phone call to a victim, falsely claiming that transferring the right to enter a nursing home constituted a criminal offense.

The victim subsequently sent Tetsuya and his accomplices 2.75 million yen—equivalent to over $17,000—via postal mail.

“He will be deported once our board of commissioners issues the order for his summary deportation. Additionally, he will be placed on our immigration blacklist and permanently banned from re-entering the Philippines for being an undesirable alien,” said BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado.
